ISLAMABAD: Three Pakistani soldiers and five Indian soldiers were killed in a cross-border exchange of fire in the disputed Kashmir region, officials said yesterday.

Reuters quoted Major General Asif Ghafour, a spokesman for the Pakistani armed forces as saying in a tweet on Twitter: The Indian forces have intensified the fire along the disputed border known as the Line of Control, noting that the exchange of fire killed three Pakistani soldiers and five Indians.

An Indian army spokesman could not be reached for comment.

The deaths come at a time of growing tension between the nuclear-armed rivals after India scrapped the status of its part of the disputed Kashmir region.
