Infamous Abu Ghraib prison shuts down

The Iraqi Justice Ministry is temporarily closing the Abu Ghraib prison that made headlines in early 2004 over revelations of widespread prisoner abuse. All of the 2,400 inmates have been transferred from the prison in the increasingly violent Anbar province. Fallujah, the city where some of the most significant fighting during the US occupation of Iraq occurred, was recaptured by insurgents at the beginning of this year, and has caused the security of the province to spiral downwards. This comes on the heels of a well-planned Al-Qaeda attack on the facility last year, which resulted in more than 500 inmates escaping. RT’s Lindsay France has more details on the closing of this infamous prison.

Two good news items: Abu Ghraib was closed, and Lindsay France is back at the anchor desk again this week (and looking especially fantastic).

I've heard many horror stories about my "Good ol' USA" including how during our "manifest destiny" indian babies' heads were smashed in like baby seals to save bullets. Also how syphilis and radiation was fed to blacks to see what happens. This story from Iraq still surprises and disgusts me. Trying to blame the policies of torture that came to light on a few know nothing guards added to the embarrassment. Go USA!

Abu Ghraib is not only infamous for what the Americans did there but also for the hundreds of thousands tortured & killed there under Sadam. We're now beginning to experience the costs of our swapping out of dictatorships. Nevertheless, Abu Ghraib should stand not only as a memorial to its victims but as a reminder to Iraqis that they should never want to go down those roads again. And neither should we.
