Americans spend too much on education

The US strives to lead the world in the number of college graduates. At the same time, not enough jobs are being created to meet demand as student debt piles up, forcing millions of Americans to settle for less than what they dreamed of. Lauren Kelley, an associate editor at AlterNet explained Americans simply spend far too much on higher education, forcing many into debt they may never be able to pay off.

Vocational training, that's socialism! But seriously, the GOP has been cutting those programs for years. Assholes.

@eternallord perhaps, but that does not negate the market distortions that occur when a government acts to "make education more affordable" by taking from the general populace at the point of a gun and giving money to a select few and to favor a politically connected establishment like higher education. The end result has been a general increase in prices beyond what otherwise would have happened had govt not interfered. It has thus made education less affordable and less likely for more people.

@agamemnon960 Less likely and less affordable that is, without going into massive debt. This also acts to water down the beneficial effect on one's job prospects when there are so many with a Bachelor's degree. The benefit of a Bachelor degree one had in the 1950's is no more. One will need to get a Master's degree to see the same benefit today – even so only the better schools confer this kind of benefit in the job market.

@Will224000 You're watching RT. They are massively bias toward the U.S. so of course the title would reflect that.

Poor reporting, nothing on what causes the high prices of education. Just a bunch of complaining with no solutions.
Get the government to stop subsidized college loans and fine tune the curriculum to the student's major. No need to waste time on having business majors work on calculus. Let us not forget the racket with student books.

the US is oversaturated with degrees vs the amount of jobs that require them. it's just another way for Obama to indebt even more Americans to his puppetmasters on Wall Street.

bottom line is, the colleges and govt are in bed with each other. they want your future money. What better way to guarantee income without taxing the people. everything is a scam.

College is a JOKE. I have a high school diploma,but make more money than my supervisor. Most people use college as a 4 year vacation,and also an indoctrination into the liberal nightmare that is socialism/communism

You can learn everything in a Library that you can "at college."

Vocational school?! We don't make anything anymore!

This is a serious issue when it comes to spending money on college because like she said students are going to college and getting degrees. When they leave college we have tons of money in debt and can't find a job that match our career. Every single yearn that goes by more and more collefe students are in the same situation where they can't make ends meet. Then we end up becoming delinqents on loan accounts because we can't pay any of the money back.

@gringodeltoro1

I agree.

@hstone39

Not only that, college students with degrees have to compete with people who have experience in the same career. Talking about people with 20+ years of experience. College tuition needs to be reformed because every college or intitution tuition prices keeps rising. This is how the new world order keeps the youth from gaining critical knowledge and putting it to use. The system is a complete fraud and we shouldn't have to pay a dime back to the government or the banks.

Since I'm on this topic about education, I was promise an oppurtunity when I recieved my degree and I have not recieved that oppurtunity. I feel like I went to school for nothing and just to waste my time. I did everything I needed to do and nothing happened and I'm still in the same position. What the hell is going on? I'm not getting any information about what's next. There is no reason for me to stay in school any longer because I'm 25 yrs old and I been in college for the past 6 years.

@hstone39

This is the last semester that i'm currently taking in college because I don't like being lied too when I spent so many years to get to where I needed to be and not be able to experience the success behind it. Plus, this is a bad example for other college students who made it and still being surpressed. It's not fair at all to me and other students.

Fuck college, technical school is where it's at. You go to trade school for a career. You go to College to waste daddy's money.

And I'm gonna teach u something about stereotype, stereotypes r base on vase general amount of certain types not based on some pple u know.

Here in the UK I've met council workers with degree's in English now clearing drains for minimum wage, pretty pathetic. It also depends what course a person take they may all cost the same but some degrees are worth more than others.

Hayate Azekura

@hstone39 You know how to stop college from rising tuition. Stop government from subsiding it, how can the prices go down, if the government keeps doing that. So there is no motive for colleges to lower the prices of tuition if the government will make up the rest of the cost.

With regards to AYP, if a poorly performing district receives funding from the government to help improve their academics, they may then lose funding once they start to perform well. Im not saying that more funding is the only solution but I feel that the districts may not know what programs allow them to improve in the long run if they immediately lose funding during the time of their improvement. I also recommend watching the "Problems in Public Education" by XKYmedia. Search for XKYmedia

I must admit that was a very informative video. thanks for sharing that with us, I dont always hear about the problems of AYP but glad to see people are talking about it now

apple johnny

yes that is correct. Sometimes if they don't have particular programs to help improve the districts, and are able to establish new programs with the help of funding, then they will likely not be able to keep the program running once the funding is eliminated. it is unfortunate.
