The Morality of Conscientious Objection

Do soldiers have an obligation to fight even illegal wars? In the era of an all-volunteer military the question is not often asked. Nevertheless, what happens when the government breaks its end of the contract and goes to war in an unconstitutional manner? Former US Air Force Captain Justin Pavoni joins the Liberty Report with his experiences as a conscientious objector.

Illegal war which was not approved by Congress. Contract works both ways. Opt out.

I think that not all of those serving in the military are aware of this avenue out of the military. I asked a soldier once if there was a way out of service and he answered no and if one refused to fight then one would be killed…

i was in the air force too. a captain is a great accomplishment, and a big investment to walk away from. he should be given a lot of credit, if its factual.

Ron Paul wouldn't talk about bs like American Exceptionalism.
That's why he's in hundreds of countries fully accepted.
Remember when Romney visited Poland but the biggest banner was to great Ron Paul?

War is so unjust and ugly, all those who wage it must try to cut off their voice of conscience within themselves.

My Dad, who went to Vietnam early as a Green Beret and came back changed from a conservative to a libertarian, used to play a game with me when I was about 3 years old. He would say… ( Go over there and hit your Mother, and then run back to me because your mother will be mad.) I was an obedient child and I would do this. Until one day, he asked me to (hit my mother and run back to him and I asked…(But why daddy?) (Why do you want me to hit her?) My dad had achieved… Read more »

Yeah, I remember all the invective against conscientious objectors. They were the official devils of the day, easy propaganda targets.

It's been a long time since we have needed to defend ourselves…. most wars are just a product of manipulation of the population to perpetuate the military industrial complex…..1.45trillion $ for a fighter jet!!!? yeah right..how much did it actually cost to build it; look how badly we are being robbed Americans! (keep in mind that a consumer car costs 1200$ to manufacture in America, 3-4$ for an xbox, 25 cents for a pack of smokes and the most expensive part of a bottle of pills is the plastic bottle which costs about 18 cents) out right theft and sophistry!

American conscientious objectors are automatically noble? I can't help wondering how he'd feel about Russian conscientious objection to military duties, which only became an option a few years ago, which is appalling.

too easy to say cowards etc but for those in just wars like stopping hitler etc those veterans must have been very disheartened by these objectors, it's akin to working and giving away your pay.does the objectors conscious ever invoke the thought-out one minute I can't have this it's unfair that others fight for my rights or freedoms?just my thoughts and don't reply with religious or other nonsense.

EE…
People enter into a sacred contract when they marry. Divorce breaks that sacred contract yet no one lobbies to end all divorces and separations.
Besides, the fellow who finds military life a torture worse than death sees all kinds of others given discharges for myriad reasons. Where is the justice of letting them go and making him stay?

The military could fall apart if military people could selectively object to a war. It's up to the civilian population to hold the government accountable for what's being done in a war.

We are so far gone down the path of solving problems with bombs, can we ever change?

Linda Poole

Absolutely, USAF Captain Justin Pavoni has a right inherent in the United States Constitution and the Declaration of Independence to speak out about an unjust war. The volunteer military should never be slaves of the powers that be! Never!

What is going on overseas of creating so-called terrorists to fight, and then kill with no transparency is the same thing the United States Government did with Native Americans. The government of Georgia for instance held a sort of lottery for people to land that Indians lived on, and then they could go in and torch their homes and kill them and take over the land. And Georgia is not the only state that did this. First, we are told the bullshit story of history that the Pilgrims shared Thanksgiving with Indians who helped them learn about growing corn, and… Read more »

There are one billion humans slowly starving to death. And while this is going on, libertarians are among the more intelligent upper-half of society that hoards all the land, wealth, political power and quality healthcare. But then, if there is no such thing as good, evil or hypocrisy, why think about?

John Ellis

Most would agree that the early Christians, because they for 400 years were all pacifists who owned no more wealth then the poor, that they would quality as being good. So, to use force to overcome crime and to own more wealth then the poor, is this evil?
And so, to know for a fact what is evil, is this not what planet earth is all about?
