Puerto Rico: How Government Increases Suffering

Natural disasters are, and will always be, difficult to prepare for and bounce back from. Unfortunately, a mistaken belief and faith in government makes both preparing and bouncing back much worse than it has to be. Ron Paul helps to dispel the fantasy of government “help.”

I believe Ron Paul is not correctly representing the history of the situation in Puerto Rico, perhaps not deliberately, but merely through failure to do background research and relying instead upon his libertarian ideology as if it were reality itself.

You guys are really on the wrong side of this issue! Your heart is not in the right place, it seems.

People forget about moral hazard. Thinking the government has to help and guaranteeing the government will help changes our behavior. What's worse? A prepared group of savers losing what they have due to their location choice and then using their savings and insurance to support themselves with minimal government help, or a bunch of people living like nothing can go wrong and then becoming a complete sob story that guilts the entire country into deficit spending (When that country already has 20trillion in debt and an economy that sacrifices dollar purchasing power to prevent deflation)? There used to be a… Read more »

It is a big ocean to get to Puerto Rico. Here in the U.S. we can drive to those states that are being affected. Most of the help comes from volunteers and Christian organizations. These volunteers and Christian organizations can't just drive to Puerto Rico.

When you accused people of saying something that doesn't make sense to you, you need to give them the benefit of the doubt. why they say what they said? There is always a reason behind it.

Condemnation before investigation is very unwise and unfair.

What happens when you DO plan and prepare??? And you get ill, let's say, run out of your savings, have no family, what about then????

OK. So they didn't save for a rainy day. They were/are poor. How could they save? What do you do? Ignore them? Punish them by not helping? It doesn't help saying they "should have" done this or that. This is where they are NOW. What solutions do you have to help them NOW? Many of these people were caught in a system they don't even understand. They are just trying to live their lives. They don't even KNOW to think about the things you are discussing. Flood insurance???? Jesus Christ!! Many of these people rent. What is WRONG with you?

I never thought Ron would be absolutely clueless on an issue. So why is the Puerto Rico bankrupt? Not a single peep about the Jones act or how the pharm industry sent the Island into a recession after they left after the key tax incentive was repealed.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but the official story about HAARP doesn't seem to completely mesh. And so many natural disasters lately. A few people getting rich from these disasters at the expense of many being impoverished by them. Same with the wars. Does make you wonder.

Here we go again; Paul teaching his rubes that government (in general) is bad knowing full well the remnants of democracy and regulation is the only thing keeping the corporate wolves from the throat of the population. These criminals and corporate shills already work for the oligarchs and it appears the oligarchs’ are ordering Paul to recruit more rubes. Recruit those idiots that are easily fooled; who simplistically latch onto one of the now mindless words such as Liberty, Freedom, and Progress the oligarchs use to get these fools to vote against their own best interests. Paul is able to… Read more »

If anyone was possibly paying attention to the National Embarrassment of the Government's response to Hurricane Katrina and the Photo-Ops that followed, that itself should've brought to bear the ineptitude of the American Government. It has been well known by the Electorate of the track record of the American Government's Bureaucratic mismanagement of Disaster Relief. Puerto Rico is the undeniable living embodiment and is watching first hand why "Good Intentions" never seems to benefit the Citizenry, that Bureaucrats claim they want to "Help". All I would note, If the American Embarrassment of Hurricane Katrina was any indication of how the… Read more »

Puerto Rico has Been trying to get Independence but us government officials literally shot people in the streets it was a massacre in ponce and other cities and had the FBI intimidating activist. The reason it's taking longer to help them its to get the people desperate so the banksters could privatise the roads, electricity etc.. called Vulture Funds and there will be BlowBack.

Take all the Wasteful, Inefficient, Unconstitutional, Unethical, and Immoral things that Government does, and none are as reprehensible as Wars of Aggression.War is easily the worst thing that Governments undertake, and they're the only group of people that can pull it off. Private individuals and Private groups or gangs could never get away with Mass Murder in the way that Governments can, because they'd never be able to get the Funds. Private individuals and groups can't Tax.Government forcefully takes whatever funds that it wants from its Citizenry, and there's no way out. Even if the American Citizenry hate the Wars for Oil and… Read more »
