Syria regretted that the fact-finding mission on the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria did not comply with the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and expressed grave concern at the attempts of some States to make unfounded accusations against Syria.
Syria’s Permanent Representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, said in a statement yesterday to the 92nd session of the Executive Council held at the Organization’s headquarters in The Hague, according to the agency «SANA»: «While Syria continues to cooperate with the fact-finding mission It regrets that the Mission did not comply with the provisions of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, did not adhere to the terms of reference of its work, carried out remote investigations and refused visits to sites of attack under various pretexts and relied on the analysis of photos and videos published in the sources. He stressed that Syria reaffirmed its official request to send the fact-finding team to the city of Khan Sheikhoun and the town of Latamna in order to investigate the incidents that occurred in the past in order to reach real conclusions and not fake investigations conducted on Turkish territory and away from the site of the event.
Sabbagh deplored the US administration’s anticipation of the fact-finding mission’s investigation into the allegations of the use of chemical weapons in Syria and to issue the findings and judgments alone, noting that it is not surprising that this behavior coincides with significant positive changes in Syria, whether through the field progress in defeating terrorists or related Progress in the political process.

He stressed that Syria believes that what is needed now is to concentrate international efforts to confront this real danger and to effectively implement all the provisions of the Convention without politicization and take a decisive attitude towards the countries that cover the crimes of terrorist groups so that we can completely eliminate chemical terrorist acts.
He stressed the need to work hard to achieve the universality of the agreement.
He pointed out that in this regard, Syria supported the decision taken by the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly entitled «Holding a conference to establish a zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East», pointing out that Syria looks forward to this fruitful and effective results.
